description:
The Statewide independent Living Council has joined forces with the National REVUP campaign to bring education and awareness to individuals with disabilities and the importance of registering to vote. The initiative will also educate the community about the Core Services that the Centers for Independent Living provide. After determining that there is a need for education regarding these subjects, SILC Secretary Jamie Duplechine and the Executive Director Jessica Lewis will be doing a REVUP/SILC Tour.
The purpose of the REV UP Campaign is to increase the political power of the disability community while also engaging candidates and the media on disability issues. REV UP stands for Register! Educate! Vote! Use your Power! We want to educate voters about issues and candidates; promote turnout of voters with disabilities across the state; engage candidates and the media on disability issues, and protect eligible voters’ right to participate in elections. The purpose of the SILC tour is to educate individuals with disabilities about the Centers for Independent Living throughout the state are and how they are consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, non-residential, private, non-profit agencies that are designed and operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities and provide an array of independent living services.
During the entire month of September, we will conduct the REVUP/SILC Tour in order to address the need for education in the community regarding voting and the services of the Centers for Independent Living. Voters Registration will be on site for individuals with disabilities.
