With 65 direct employees, company supplies activated carbon solutions engineered to curb mercury emissions at coal power plants
COUSHATTA — Today, Governor Bobby Jindal and CEO Brian Leen of ADA Carbon Solutions LLC highlighted progress at the company’s Red River Parish facilities, where the company has invested over $350 million in an activated carbon manufacturing operation and exceeded its original goal for job creation. Completed in 2010, the Coushatta manufacturing site processes lignite mined at nearby Five Forks Mine into activated carbon, which is processed and shipped from a rail and logistics facility in Campti, Louisiana, near Natchitoches. The Coushatta facility is the largest, most-automated, activated carbon plant on the continent.
ADA Carbon Solutions employs 65 people, more than the original projection of 50 jobs. Direct employees earn salaries in a range of $50,000 to $65,000, plus benefits. The 65 direct jobs are resulting in an estimated 299 new indirect jobs, for a total of more than 360 new jobs in the Northwest Region. Additionally, the more than two-year development phase included 325 construction jobs at peak activity.
Governor Jindal said, “ADA has met and exceeded its original job creation goal, which means more people have been able to find good-paying jobs to stay right here in Louisiana. ADA’s job growth is helping to drive Louisiana’s strong economic momentum. It’s the latest example of a company that can thrive in an environment where we have reined in government spending, improved workforce training, overhauled the ethics system, created more educational opportunities for our children and cut burdensome businesses taxes.”
ADA Carbon Solutions is a major supplier of activated carbon, which absorbs mercury effectively through its porous composition and broad surface area. The primary customers for ADA’s activated carbon solutions are the owners and operators of coal-fired power plants.
"We are very proud to be part of the community here in Red River Parish, Louisiana,” ADA Carbon Solutions CEO Brian Leen said. “We evaluated other sites for our business in other states but chose to locate here because of the proximity to key raw material sources and customers and strong community support. ADA Carbon Solutions is in the business of providing new and leading-edge technologies for cleaner energy. The key to our success rests in our ability to innovate and provide our utility customers with reliable solutions for environmental compliance. The talent and passion of our people is the primary determining factor in achieving these objectives. We have invested approximately $350 million locally and created 65 permanent new jobs, and our growth prospects couldn't be brighter. We are very happy with our decision to come to Louisiana.”
With increasing industry demand anticipated for activated carbon, ADA anticipates further increases in employment at its Coushatta area facilities in the next several years. At its 1,770-acre Five Forks Mine, ADA has a more than 20-year supply of lignite available to supply its activated carbon solutions. The company’s manufacturing plant in Coushatta carries a capacity of 175 million pounds of activated carbon per year.
“ADA Carbon Solutions has made a significant impact to our community,” Coushatta Mayor Johnny Cox said. “The facility has improved the environment by developing cutting-edge technology to reduce mercury emissions. It has placed the City of Coushatta on the map by producing career opportunities and long-term jobs. Because of the Red River plant, we can all breathe a little easier.“
“The quality jobs created by this innovative company represent a big economic impact for Red River Parish,” said President Scott Martinez of the North Louisiana Economic Partnership. “ADS Carbon Solutions’ expansion in our region is a testament to the great business climate, low business costs and quality workforce we have in North Louisiana."
