Governor Bobby Jindal Announces the Interim Appointment of Lynn Robertson as Port Allen Mayor; Calls Special Election

BATON ROUGE – Today, Governor Bobby Jindal announced the interim appointment of Lynn Robertson as mayor of Port Allen. Robertson will fill the vacant seat that resulted from the recall of former Mayor Demetric "Deedy" Slaughter.
According to Louisiana law, when a vacancy occurs in the office of a mayor, the City Council or local governing authority has twenty days to appoint a person to fill the vacancy. If the vacancy is not filled within that time, the law requires that the Governor fill the vacancy by interim appointment. The City Council did not fill the vacancy, which made an interim Gubernatorial appointment necessary by law.
Louisiana law also requires the local governing authority to call a special election within twenty days and, if it does not do so, that the Governor shall call a special election to permanently fill the seat. The City Council did not call a special election within twenty days. As a result, the Governor issued a proclamation to set the election on the next regularly scheduled election date.
The special election must include a special primary and a special general election throughout the jurisdiction of the City of Port Allen in West Baton Rouge Parish.  The special primary will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The general election will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014. The special election will be held and conducted under the applicable provisions of the Louisiana Election Code.
Robertson has agreed to serve as interim mayor and has indicated she will not seek to run in the election.
Lynn Robertson, of Port Allen, is the Executive Director of the Louisiana Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and is a real estate broker. From 1993 to 2004, she was the Mayor of Port Allen for three terms. Robertson was the first female mayor in the city’s history. Robertson serves on the Greater Baton Rouge Port Commission as a gubernatorial appointee representing West Baton Rouge Parish.
